Advogato Frequently Asked Questions

This will do till someone else gets round to writing a proper Advogato FAQ.

The site's current status
Q: What is the current status of the site?
A: As of the 6th of September 2006 the site was going to be dead and continued on in read-only mode. Raph explained why but there's currently some discussion about keeping the site alive under the stewardship of Steven Rainwater.

XML-RPC
Q: Where can I find information about Advogato's XML-RPC interface?
A: http://www.advogato.org/xmlrpc.html

Q: Where is the "diary" variable declared in the example python code?
A: It isn't declared. To get the examples to work you need to replace all references to "dairy" with "server.diary".

Q: Where is the authenticate method?
A: The authenticate method belongs to the server object. Use server.authenticate(userString, passwordString).

Certifications and the trust metric
Q: Where is the trust metric explained?
A: http://www.advogato.org/trust-metric.html

Q: Where are the certification guidelines?
A: http://www.advogato.org/certs.html

A: An RSS 0.91 feed of the articles is available at http://www.advogato.org/rss/articles.xml

Q: Can I get the recentlog as an RSS feed?
A: No.

Diary ratings
Q: Why do diaries have numbers rating them? Why doesn't the recentlog show me everybody's diaries?
A: Read the following diary entries by Raph.

Q: Why doesn't my diary show up on the recentlog?
A: Chances are your rating is lower than the default threshold for recentlog which is 3. This usually means that those who 'certed' you aren't very fond of your diary entries.

Q: How do I see the values of all the diaries that I have directly and indirectly rated?
A: http://www.advogato.org/rating/report/YOUR_USERNAME

Q: How do I see the values of the diaries that someone else has directly and indirectly rated?
A: http://www.advogato.org/rating/report/THEIR_USERNAME

Q: What do all those figures mean?
A: See http://www.advogato.org/person/raph/diary.html?start=224 for an explanation

Q: How does all this work?
A: See the Trust Metric Howto at http://www.levien.com/free/tmetric-HOWTO.html

Miscellaneous
Q: Is there a list of users who have changed their account names?
A: Nope. You're welcome to write one.

Q: What do I do if I've forgotten my password?
A: The precedent seems to have been set that you email Raph and he helps you out. Anyone want to add some code to mod_virgule to do the usual password emailing?

Q: How do I get all my diary entries in one file?
A: Go to http://www.advogato.org/person/YOUR_USERNAME/diary.xml

Q: Wasn't there a site that had various advogato-related stats?
A: Yes, it's at http://daniel.haxx.se/advogato/stats.cgi
